Broadway the Thirteenth
Saints Alive! Theatre Society | Atlantic Fringe Festival 2014
Aug. 29 - Sept. 6 | Neptune Studio Theatre
Review by Pearl Chan.
The product of watching (a few too many) Broadway shows, Broadway the Thirteenth is a tribute to all the big ones. It is also a testament of what the environment of Fringe Festivals can allow for.
A conglomeration of music which would have cost more than anyone could ever afford to buy the rights to, Broadway the Thirteenth would never have happened in another context. Broadway the Thirteenth displays what can happen when theatre artists engage with and use that which drew them to theatre in the first place.
The highlight of the show was the singing, led by Becca Guilderson's impressive vocal performance. Taylor Long's performance further displayed the elasticity of the quartet + pianist.
Although the acting was over the top and the characters stock, it was an enjoyable reminder of what fun this sort of theatre can be. Not all theatre must furrow our brows.
